From Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Right-leaning responses to the limited release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.

Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric

Administration officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.

Concerns Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the extensive black blocks prompt serious concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater openness.

“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.

Some Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure

But, some conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly behind the administration.

The release—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.

But some do not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the attack.

“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement

Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.

Overall Conservative Comment Remains Muted

However, broader comment on the right was relatively muted after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the files' release.

Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
