The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
